Mattie’s at Green Pastures finally reopened after renovations about a month ago. I had the chance to tour the space back in December when it was under construction and knew it was going to be fabulous back then, but to see it complete last night was amazing!
The restaurant is in a huge white plantation style house and while it’s located in a neighborhood not too far from downtown you totally feel like you’re in the country. The grounds are surrounded by live oak trees and it was so peaceful sitting outside on their patio; church bells in the background, beautiful landscape and great music.
Green Pastures opened in 1893 and the restaurant in 1946. What I love about the updated space is that they’ve kept all the original fireplaces and the amazing staircase so you can still feel the history there. Each room in the house has a unique style but they all flow perfectly together.
Downstairs is a dining area and an awesome bar but what I love about the upstairs is that there are multiple rooms to host private events. This room is right off of the staircase and is best for parties of around 20 people, I would say. There are also several other rooms upstairs that you could rent out for a private event or, if you have a larger event, you could rent out the entire space.
^How amazing is this intimate space??
There’s also another bar upstairs with peacock wallpaper, one thing to know about Green Pastures is that they’ve always had peacocks on the property and still do today! We met the nicest bartender who recommended the Rosabella and it was SO good!
^I’m also obsessed with their napkins, I love all the personal touches you find throughout the restaurant
After we toured the house and grabbed a drink it was time for some dinner and you guys…this food was AMAZING! Some of the best we’ve ever had in Austin. I’m surprised we haven’t heard more about Mattie’s cuisine but I have a feeling this place will soon be packed every night!
We started with the Baby Spinach Salad, it was light but so tasty. I loved the mixture of figs and goat cheese…yum!
We got a little excited when it came to the main course and ordered a bit of everything lol I ordered the Tender Belly Bone-In Pork Chop which came with some veggies on the side and Steve ordered the 44 Farms Flank Steak which came with thyme salt fries and was most likely the deciding factor in why he chose that. For the sides we ordered the Crispy Cauliflower, this was SO good and idk how but seriously tasted like BBQ Chicken lol and we also ordered the Organic Pomme Purée AKA mashed potatoes with cheese and bacon…OMG! I seriously had to ask the waitress to take the plate of mashed potatoes aways at one point because I could not stop eating them.
We normally don’t order dessert but the Coconut Cremè sounded too good to pass up! Steve ordered the mint tea which was amazing and when the dessert was delivered we found out it was egg free (Steve can actually eat it) which was perfect because then I didn’t have to eat dessert alone lol
To be honest, I mostly went to Mattie’s at Green Pastures to see the renovations and was expecting the food to be mediocre, but I was SO impressed with everything there! The new look, the food, the drinks and the staff…omg the staff was one of the best part of Mattie’s! Everyone was so friendly and genuine, we spent majority of our dinner chatting with the host, Paul. Overall, dining at Mattie’s was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to go back!
